New England Digital Corporation was a pioneering force in the digital audio and music technology industry from 1976 to 1993. Founded in Norwich, Vermont, and later relocating to White River Junction, the company is renowned for its groundbreaking product, the Synclavier Synthesizer System. This system evolved into the Synclavier Digital Audio System, also known as the “Tapeless Studio,” which revolutionized the way music and sound were produced and recorded.
The Synclavier was developed in collaboration with Dartmouth College Professors Jon Appleton and Frederick J. Hooven, along with NED co-founders Sydney A. Alonso and Cameron W. Jones. It became the prototype for all subsequent digital non-linear synthesis, polyphonic sampling, magnetic recording, and sequencing systems technology that is now standard in music and sound design.
New England Digital’s commitment to innovation was evident in their continuous refinement of the Synclavier, leading to significant advancements in digital audio technology.
